Revival of a Classic: Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona
Preserving Automotive Heritage with Engineering: In this article we embark on a journey through time and technology, as we present the art of 3D printing and its role in creating a bespoke part for a classic Ferrari, ensuring its legacy lives on for future generations.
At Erising, we are immensely proud of our expertise in 3D printing, and today we are excited to share one of our most enjoyable projects. We had the pleasure of contributing to the restoration of an iconic Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona. A challenging but exciting problem, as the originality of the component had to be recreated in the utmost detail.
The Challenge
This classic Ferrari had a broken turn signal selector attachment, a piece that did not exist on the market, and which called into question the completion of the restoration. Our client, a specialist in the restoration of this type of car, was able to supply us with the damaged part, temporarily glued in order to be able to reproduce it. It was crucial to ensure that we reproduced the part accurately to preserve the authenticity of this component.
The Process
In order to meet the design requirements, we started the process with a 3D scan of the component, which allowed us to capture all the intricate details of the damaged part. Having a comprehensive 3D model in hand, we transformed it into a parametric solid model through reverse engineering techniques. This stage made it possible to refine and optimize the project according to the client’s requests, considering the small adjustments necessary for the incorporation of all adjacent components.
With the revised design in hand, we decided to use Polyamide 12 (also known as Nylon) as the material of choice for 3D printing. Using Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology, we meticulously brought the new part to life layer by layer, ensuring precision and accuracy in production. The choice of Polyamide 12 guarantees remarkable durability, making it an ideal material for functional components in automobiles or in applications that require constant stress.
To ensure authenticity and a perfect visual effect, the 3D printed part has been treated with black ink, matching the aesthetics of the original component, making it indistinguishable from the rest of this Ferrari’s interior.
The Final Result
The moment of truth arrived when we handed over the revitalized part to our client. Witnessing their satisfaction validated our hard work and dedication to preserving automotive history through 3D printing.
At Erising, we are passionate about bringing innovation and excellence to every project we undertake. Our collaboration with the client on this restoration of a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona is proof of our commitment to delivering exceptional results.
